Living in Faith

As a Catholic school, Jesus Christ remains central to every aspect of school life.  All pupils are educated in the beliefs and devotional practices of the Catholic church. Participation in daily collective act of worship remains at the helm of every morning and afternoon session, within RE lessons and at the end of each day.

The Catholic RE scheme ‘Living and Growing as the People of God’ is followed throughout the school. This is supplemented by work on the saints and stories from the Old and New Testaments, Circle time sessions and Personal, Social and Health Education. Children participate in special liturgies during the school year which are timed to coincide with events in the Church’s calendar.

Our parish priest, Fr Kaz, works closely with school staff and families, to prepare year 3 pupils for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, whilst pupils in Year 6 prepare for Confirmation.

Relationships and Family Life (Sex Education) is taught formally in all classes and is integrated into Science and RE. Parents and carers are advised that, in desiring a Catholic education for their child, it is expected that all pupils will participate in RE lessons. Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children, although this is strongly discouraged, but may be required to supervise their children during this period, if adult supervision is not available.

All pupils learn about other religions and cultures and are encouraged to show respect and acknowledgement for the beliefs of others through open discussion and shared experiences.

Year 6 pupils are given the opportunity to visit Alton Castle, an education centre which combines a spiritual retreat with outdoor activities. During Lent and Advent, liturgies take place during and after school. These prayer group sessions are led by staff and pupils, whilst after-school prayer sessions are led by a parish Catechist and pupils.

School Prayer:

Lord, bless our school
so that working together,
praying and playing together,
we may learn to serve You
and serve one another.

Values and Virtues

Each half term we look at different virtues of Jesus that we share with the children during assemblies and collective worship. This half term we are looking at:

Eloquent and Truthful

Eloquent: We are eloquent when we articulate our thoughts and feeling and ask questions. It helps our relationships with the people around us and the word we live in.  Use eloquent words to express yourself and gain special connections with those around you.

Truthful : We are truthful when we express our thoughts and feeling about the world that surrounds us, we are truthful in our hearts when we follow in the footsteps of Christ. Our faith teaches us that God is the way, the truth and the light. Leading a truthful life and being truthful with those around us leads to a bright future, sharing in the light that God showers us with.

Bible references that links to being Eloquent and Truthful

Proverbs 24:26

Dear God, teach me to speak the truth always. Help me to be honest at all times.

Psalm 51:6

God delights when truth reigns in our inmost being

1 Thessalonians 5:11

Lord, help me to use my words to encourage others and build them up far more than critiquing or criticizing them.

Colossians 3:17

And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.

Sacramental Preparation

Y3 will celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion and Y6 will celebrate the Sacrament of confirmation. We invite families each half term to celebrate mass together as a community

Family Mass dates:

First Holy Communion will be celebrated on Sunday 23rd June 2019

Confirmation dates will be confirmed at a later date.

Wednesday Word

The Wednesday Word is offered to all families as a weekly family time together.

Wednesday Word Family Time presents an opportunity for even the busiest of parents to enrich relationships with their children through spending a very special 5 minutes together each week.

Every Wednesday a ‘word’, inspired by the coming Sunday’s Gospel, will be suggested for families to talk about in the home. We have structured The Wednesday Word around the Sunday Gospel, because evidence shows that Gospel values really do help family relationships to thrive.

The Wednesday Word Family Time leaflet is designed in a family friendly fashion to ensure that all family members feel included. It aims to be informative, enjoyable, and to help families maintain a special closeness throughout the school years.
