Living in Faith

As a Catholic school, Jesus Christ remains central to every aspect of school life.  All pupils are educated in the beliefs and devotional practices of the Catholic church. Participation in daily collective act of worship remains at the helm of every morning and afternoon session, within RE lessons and at the end of each day.

The Catholic RE scheme ‘Living and Growing as the People of God’ is followed throughout the school. This is supplemented by work on the saints and stories from the Old and New Testaments, Circle time sessions and Personal, Social and Health Education. Children participate in special liturgies during the school year which are timed to coincide with events in the Church’s calendar.

Our parish priest, Fr Kaz, works closely with school staff and families, to prepare year 3 pupils for the Sacraments of Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, whilst pupils in Year 6 prepare for Confirmation.

Relationships and Family Life (Sex Education) is taught formally in all classes and is integrated into Science and RE. Parents and carers are advised that, in desiring a Catholic education for their child, it is expected that all pupils will participate in RE lessons. Parents and carers have the right to withdraw their children, although this is strongly discouraged, but may be required to supervise their children during this period, if adult supervision is not available.

All pupils learn about other religions and cultures and are encouraged to show respect and acknowledgement for the beliefs of others through open discussion and shared experiences.

During Lent and Advent, liturgies take place during and after school. These prayer group sessions are led by staff and pupils, whilst after-school prayer sessions are led by a parish Catechist and pupils.

Values and Virtues

Spring 1 - 2020

Each half term we look at different virtues of Jesus that we share with the children during assemblies and collective worship. This half term we are looking at:   Compassionate and Loving

We learn to be compassionate and loving in the way our fellow pupils are treated, especially when others are in trouble; and by opening our eyes to those who suffer poverty, injustice or violence.

Compassionate:  We show concern and care towards others, near and far, especially the less fortunate.

Loving: We use our  just actions and forgiving words to show our love for others.

The Year of the Word

We share these values through Parables

Love is the greatest commandment ( Matthew 22:37-40)

Feeding of the five thousand ( Matthew 14:13-21)

Parable of the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37)

Parable of the Forgiving Father ( Luke 15:11-32)

Healing of Blind Bartimaeus (Mark 10: 46-52)

Touching the Hem of Jesus' Garment (Luke 8:40-49)

Jesus passion and death on the cross for our Salvation

St. Paul Corinthians 13

Wednesday Word

The Wednesday Word is offered to all families as a weekly family time together.

Wednesday Word Family Time presents an opportunity for even the busiest of parents to enrich relationships with their children through spending a very special 5 minutes together each week.

Every Wednesday a ‘word’, inspired by the coming Sunday’s Gospel, will be suggested for families to talk about in the home. We have structured The Wednesday Word around the Sunday Gospel, because evidence shows that Gospel values really do help family relationships to thrive.

The Wednesday Word Family Time leaflet is designed in a family friendly fashion to ensure that all family members feel included. It aims to be informative, enjoyable, and to help families maintain a special closeness throughout the school years.
